The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) was established on the auspicious occasion of Shri Krishna Janmashtami in 1964 at Swami Chinmayananda’s ashram in Powai, Mumbai. The organization was created with the noble goal of uniting Hindus worldwide, transcending caste, creed, sect, language, and geographical boundaries. VHP aims to build a strong, dedicated Hindu force devoted to the welfare of humanity, proud of their ancient traditions, values, and ideals, and ready to make any sacrifice to restore their cultural and spiritual heritage. In 1966, during the Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj, the first World Hindu Conference was organized by VHP. This gathering was perhaps the largest Hindu assembly since the era of King Harshvardhan, united by the commitment to protect Hindu values. It was a historic event where Hindus from around the world came together with a shared purpose. The powerful and inspiring sight of the Hindu masses rallying for their cause left a lasting impact. Again in 1969, another significant conference took place in Udupi, Karnataka. The gathering featured prominent saints and religious leaders, including the second Sarsanghchalak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Guruji Golwalkar. The conference addressed the social evil of untouchability, a remnant of long periods of foreign rule. The assembled saints passed a resolution condemning untouchability, stating that no one is superior or inferior based on birth, and that all Hindus are brothers, children of the same sages, and descendants of Bharat Mata. In 1979, at the second World Hindu Conference in Prayagraj, representatives from across the world participated. In 1983, during a time of growing divisions based on language, region, and the artificial Aryan-Dravidian divide, VHP undertook a remarkable initiative called the "Ekatmata Yatra" (Unity March). From north to south and east to west, the chariots carrying the sacred image of Bharat Mata (Mother India) and the holy waters of the Ganga traveled across the country, aiming to awaken millions of Hindus and bind them in unity. And on October 7, 1984, at the sacred banks of the Sarayu River in Ayodhya, a massive gathering of Ram devotees took place under the leadership of revered saints. Here, a resolution was passed to build a grand temple at the birthplace of Lord Ram, where an invader, Babur, had demolished the temple and locked Ram Lalla inside a structure. The Ram Janmabhoomi movement became one of the largest non-violent movements of the century. Ultimately, this collective awakening of Hindu power led to the fulfillment of the dream of constructing a grand Ram temple, marking a significant step in the restoration of national pride. Thus, The Vishwa Hindu Parishad has emerged as a powerful tool for the resurgence of Hindu pride and values in modern times. It has not only revived a sense of unity among Hindus worldwide but also worked tirelessly to reinstate cultural and religious traditions that had been weakened due to centuries of foreign rule and social fragmentation. By organizing mass movements, protecting sacred sites, and advocating for social reforms like the eradication of untouchability, VHP has instilled a renewed sense of purpose in the Hindu community. It has become a beacon for Hindus to reconnect with their spiritual roots, encouraging them to take pride in their ancient heritage while addressing contemporary challenges. Through various initiatives, VHP serves as a unifying force, mobilizing the Hindu society to rise above internal divisions and external threats, making it a critical tool for the resurgence and preservation of Hinduism in the 21st century.
